MBA Summer Camps

In response to the ongoing COVID-19 situation, the MBA Board and Summer Band Camp Coordinators have made the difficult decision to cancel the MBA Summer Band Camps and the Summer Jazz Camp this year. It is disappointing that the MBA is not able to offer these experiences to students, but the health and safety of our campers, volunteers, and camp staff must remain the MBA's highest priority. Thank you for you patience and understanding as we made this difficult decision.

The MBA would to thank our Camp Coordinators, instructors, and volunteers for the commitment and passion they bring to our camps. We know that band camp is the highlight of the year for many students, and we hope that we are able to provide these amazing experiences again next summer.

The MBA will continue to provide online content for students and teachers over the summer, so please check the MBA e-news, as well as the Online Resources and Key Updates sections of the MBA website regularly for new information.

MBA Spring Board Meeting

The MBA Board meet all day Saturday April 25 and reviewed numerous programs and the impact on the association, events, programs, participants and remains committed to ensure we can deliver any and all programs safely and with input from all individuals involved.  In many circumstances it can take time to gather the best information available.  Events in our world are currently evolving quickly, and of course many people are wondering about the MBA sponsored events that are scheduled over the next few months.  Further updates can be expected in mid-May and early June as we learn more for the health officials, school divisions and all parties involved.

Summer Band Camps

The MBA Board and Summer Band Camp Coordinators are still in discussion about the status of this year’s Summer Band Camp programs scheduled for August. The MBA is committed to ensuring the health and well-being of all participants, and will follow all health guidelines recommended by the province. A further announcement can be expected by the beginning of June.

Please know that the leadership and volunteers in the Manitoba Band Association are working hard to make the right decisions for our community, keeping the well-being and best interests of our young Manitoba musicians at the forefront at all times. We appreciate your patience and understanding as we work within these unprecedented circumstances.

Honour Band Update

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we will be postponing the MBA Junior and Intermediate Honour Bands originally scheduled for spring 2020. We remain committed to providing this enrichment opportunity once we receive directives from our health care professionals that it is safe to do so. As such, we are currently exploring alternate dates in September or October 2020. We are committed to proceeding cautiously and prudently while following the directives we receive from the province of Manitoba. We hope to have more concrete information closer to the end of June as we learn how this health crisis evolves. At that point, we will be able to discuss specific details and questions about the honour band experience.

MBA On-Line Resources

Over the last few weeks, we all have seen many ideas floating around social media from our colleagues from around the world.  Under the leadership of Sean Adams, Josh Bater, and Matt Abraham, the MBA has begun the task of compiling an evolving list of resources for all of us to share, which are now published on the MBA website home page.  We are trying to find a single place for any and all resource to be shared.  If you have any content you would like to share, please send to Josh Bater (josh.bater@westparkschool.com) for collection.  We aim to continually update the folder as items are received. Other CBA and MEA chapters are also publishing items for sharing across Canada and we will continue to share them as they become relevant and available.

Dear MBA Community,

The MBA remains committed to ensure we can deliver any and all programs safely and with input from all individuals involved.  In many circumstances it can take time to gather the best information available.  Events in our world are currently evolving quickly, and of course many people are wondering about the MBA sponsored events that are scheduled over the next few months.

We are sending you the following updates as a result of some recent developments in responses to the COVID-19 virus.  Travel, and large group gatherings are being restricted in many areas across Canada and organizers at many levels are being encouraged to practice safety and prudency measures in response to reducing the spread of the virus.  We are sure you are anxious to know more, and so are we.  The organizers, volunteers, and band directors are in discussions regularly, and we will keep you informed as plans develop.  Several facilities have been closed to gatherings, travel is being restricted, and school divisions plans are being updated daily.  The MBA have the following two announcements at this time:

ONE:  Winnipeg’s Classic 107 Level One Band Festival

The MBA Executive, and Festival Chairs in response to the ongoing COVID-19 health crisis, has made the difficult decision to cancel the Classic 107 Level One Band festivals scheduled for April 21-22 in Brandon and April 28-May 1 in Winnipeg.  The MBA will automatically carry forward all registration fees and apply them to next year’s Level One Band Festivals.  Further details can be expected shortly.

TWO:  Manitoba Junior and Intermediate Honour Bands

The MBA Executive and Honour Band Chairs are still in discussion about the status of this year’s Honour Band programs scheduled for early May.  The MBA is committed to ensuring the health and well-being of all participants. A further announcement can be expected shortly.

Please know that the leadership and volunteers in the Manitoba Band Association are working hard to make the right decisions for our community, keeping the well-being and best interests of our young Manitoba musicians at the forefront at all times. We appreciate your patience and understanding as we work within these unprecedented circumstances.

Musically,

Cheri Foster

MBA President
