Christmas Tuba FestivalMBA's Christmas Tuba Festival (established 2002) provides an opportunity for tuba and euphonium players from across Manitoba to gather on the second Saturday in December to perform a concert of Christmas carols for Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra patrons. A rehearsal is held from 5:45 - 7:00 pm and the performance takes place on the Piano Nobile level from 7:05 - 7:45 pm. Players of all ages and abilities are welcome. The cost is $5 and the music is free. If your registration form arrives by December 3, 2010 you are entitled to a free Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra ticket for the evening concert. Festival ReportThe eighth annual Christmas Tuba Festival was held on December 12, 2009 in the Piano Nobile, at the Centennial Concert hall. Seventy-eight tuba and euphonium players gathered under the direction of Fraser Linklater for a rehearsal and 40 minute concert prior to the WSO’s Christmas show. Once again, it was a thrill to play in this venue and have the opportunity for young and old low brass players meet new people and share the excitement of playing in a unique and rich sounding ensemble. What better way to get in the spirit of the season. We would like to thank all the teachers who encouraged their students to participate, especially those who attended with their horns; Marissa Hirsch, Darrin Oehlerking, Beth Hiebert, Andrew Klassen, Greg Cooper, Kristen Myers, Janet Giese, Chelle Jones, Kevin Jones, Cheryl Ferguson, Jim Warner, Klaus Froese and Vanessa Nowostawski. Long and McQuade continued their support by donating a gift certificate to the best decorated instrument/instrumentalist. This year the honours went to Shelby Gasper from Arthur A. Leach School. As always, we are grateful to Amy Wolfe, Tanya Derksen and the WSO for sharing this venue at the concert hall. And of course to Ken Epp, who keeps things running smoothly with his trademark efficiency. The Christmas Tuba Festival happens this year on December 11. Be sure to grab your horn and bring a friend. See you then!
