Rebuilding, Remediating, and Rebooting Manitoba Bands



Project Impetus:

This project was developed to address the concerns of Manitoba band directors as they work to re-build and rejuvenate Manitoba bands following the impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic.

As a result of the impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic, educators have expressed concern with:

  • Reduced number of students enrolled in programs

  • Loss of the development of fundamental skills due to cancelled/paused band programs

  • Loss of momentum in their programs due to alternative programming (ie. Online, etc)


Project Format:


Phase One:  Kick-off Session (Roundtable)

Thursday, June 10, 2021   7:00PM

Guest presenters:  Bill Kristjanson, Janet Yochim, Rob Chrol

  • Panel discussion with educators who can offer perspective on

    • Recruitment and Retention

    • Working towards remediation

    • Advocating for ensembles and programs

    • What values/philosophies led to growth and development of programs?


Phase Two:  Brainstorming and Collaborating

  • late June 2021-June 2022

  • Support Pods - Participants (band directors/private teachers/freelance musicians/industry/university professors) will sign up to be a part of problem-solving “pods” of 4-6 people

  • People will be matched based on a questionnaire filled out by participants (see below)

  • Participants will meet in any way the group chooses (adhering to current public health orders)

    • Virtually

    • Outdoor

    • Phone

    • Cloud Based Collaboration (Google, Slack, etc.)


Phase Three: Reconnect

  • October 2021

  • Q & A with the panel from June

  • Pods supporting each other, offering outside perspective


Phase Four:  Wind Up and Data Collection

  • Timelines and phase details to be confirmed at a later date

  • Perhaps Q & A with the panel from June 2021

  • Pods sharing with each other information/findings

  • Social gathering to celebrate progress!


What to Expect:


Manitoba Band Association

  • Guiding Questions for Pods

  • Additional support where needed

  • Larger group events/session (Answer in the Room, Networking, etc.) TBD



  • Support pods can meet as often or as rarely as they like

  • Pods are designed to be self guided

  • Provide pod with support as needed (informally, formally, as determined by group)
