MBA Summer Band Camps (established 1989) are now offered at six locations. Activities vary from location to location and include some or all of the following: full band rehearsals, sectional instruction, small ensembles, master classes, ear training, rhythm training, sight reading, and a Friday evening public concert. Staff includes a coordinator, guest conductor and instrumental specialists. The student/staff ratio is approximately 8:1.

MBA Prairie Percussion Workshop (established in 2011 by Victoria Sparks) is a summer program for all percussion students in middle and high school.  Students attend specialized classes in all areas of concert percussion (keyboard, timpani, snare drum, and auxiliary) as well as drum set and world percussion classes.  A performance takes place at the end of the week, of the percussion ensemble groups organized by their levels of experience.  This camp is geared for students in grades 6-12, provided they have one year of musical training.

Those entering grades 5-10 with one or more years of experience on their concert band instrument including: flute, oboe, bassoon, clarinet, bass clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, French horn, trombone, euphonium, tuba, string bass and percussion. Students must provide their own instruments (except percussionists who should bring drum sticks).

  Winnipeg – Garden City Collegiate & SOPAC, (711 Jefferson Ave.) - August 17-21
  Winnipeg – St. James Camp (Location TBA) -  August 17-21

  Dauphin – MacKenzie Middle School (212 - 1st Street NE) - August 24-28

Those entering grades 5-12 with one or more years of training in music (not necessarily in percussion). Students should bring any sticks they own, all instruments will be provided.

Activities typically include small ensembles, masterclasses and area-specific classes in mallet percussion, snare drum, timpani, drum set, latin percussion and auxiliary percussion. The workshop typically concludes with an afternoon performance on the Friday (the last day of the workshop)


Staff includes a coordinator, several instructors, university student volunteers and guest artists. The student/staff ratio is approximately 8:1.
